N.H. Plans Attack on Milfoil in Lake
N.H. plans attack on milfoil in lake
BARNSTEAD, N.H. (AP) -- Officials have organized an aggressive plan of attack to rid a New Hampshire lake of the invasive weed milfoil.A similar plan has been tried to eradicate hydrilla at Pickerel Pond in Limerick, Maine; in New Hampshire, officials will use a herbicide and then pull remaining milfoil weeds by hand at Lower Suncook Lake in Barnstead. If the plan works, it could become a model for dealing with milfoil. The weed already has invaded 56 of the state's 900 lakes and ponds since it first hit New Hampshire more than 40 years ago.In Maine, the state has stepped up enforcement to protect the state's lakes and ponds from milfoil. The invasive plant has been found in several lakes and ponds, but the state has avoided an infestation.
