Backyard ponds create tranquil setting for homeowners

Backyard ponds, decorated with waterfalls, rocks, plants and brightly colored fish are gaining popularity in the Coulee Region. "A lot of people are staying home more," said Jason Olson, owner of From the Ground Up, a landscaping and pond design and installation business in Mindoro, Wis. "People are creating their own paradise right in their backyards."Olson and other professional landscaping companies offering pond kits and installation service often sell and install the Aquascape Designs Ecosystem; a model that he said requires a minimal amount of homeowner maintenance.
The pond is formed with a tub-like liner that comes in customized shapes and sizes. The liner is placed into the ground. A skimmer box draws the water in, catches debris and then the water is pumped back out, flowing through a filter. Gravel and rocks cover the pond floor. Lava rock, Olson said, is used because it encourages the growth of bacteria. Bacteria are needed to clean out impurities in the pond system. Read More!
